Wicked

It's been so long since I last wrote anything it's beyond a joke, so I've just decided to review the last book I read, which is in this case Wicked, by Gregory Maguire. I know it's an old book, so you might already have read it, but if you haven't, here's my opinion. I went to London and saw the musical a couple of years ago, and it was so great, that I decided that I'd have to read the book it was based on. It took a while to get round to it, but I did. And this is what I think... For me personally, it was interesting and definitely worth reading, I had wanted to read it, and I certainly don't regret doing so. It was such a clever concept, and when it was going well, it was REALLY going well, a fascinating idea of a prequal to The Wizard Of Oz, showing a very different take on the characters and the concept of good v evil that we get from the original story! However, it wasn't all peachy... I wouldn't recommend reading it because you have seen the musical and want to read the story again, the musical was very loosely based on the story, and made much happier, the novel is NOT the same! It was a complicated story, full of ideas and opinions on politics and religion, and there were quite a few times when the action stopped and the chapters moved slowly. The re-designing of the classic characters is done in a very clever, but not always pleasing way, and while humour is added throughout by some of the more silly characters, it is quite a heavy story at the best of times. I'll admit that my expectations were high because of my enjoyment of the musical, but i was slightly disappointed with the overaall outcome of the book. I would however be very interested to read Son Of A Witch, the next instalment of the story, to see if some of the issues are resolved in it. I would recommend this dbook to you if you are patient and clever, can follow a complex story line, and don't mind having to concentrate hard on a book. I'll read Son Of A Wicth as soon as possible and let you know what I think!

Crow Lake

A friend of mine asked would I please review the book "Crow Lake" by Mary Lawson. I read the book on holiday one year and I really loved it. The story is told by Kate, a zoologist, who tells the story of how her childhood has effected her life, decisions, work and relationships. The story of her childhood shows how a tragedy when she was very young really brought her family closer together and although it was a difficult situation for them, they were all OK because they had each other. The story however, becomes more complicated when their story becomes intertwined with the lives of their seemingly normal, quiet neighbours and start to see the violence and hardship in their lives. The Morrison family- Kate, Matt, Luke and Bo, have to learn about making sacrifices and growing up during the story. The book, is gripping, tragic and yet very happy and heart-warming all at the same time. You will find it very difficult to put it down and will be sad when it is over!

Streetdance

So I just went to see "Streetdance". If you are interested in good, believable acting and a shocking, unpredictable story-line, I'm sorry to say the "Streetdance" is not the film for you. I was right in thinking that it would be tacky and cliched, and at times, the acting became laughable. However, if you are interested in amazing dancing and a brilliant soundtrack, then this is one of the best films to watch. The film and actors completely redeemed themselves when they danced. I would say that overall, the film was... OK. The dance sequences and music were great, and it would be very good if you just wanted to watch a film that you didn't have to concentrate on, and with a very cute love story, it was like candyfloss for the brain. It wasn't a great, epic film that you will hear about for years to come, but it was enjoyable enough and very easy to watch!

Streetdance

So here is my first post. I will be going to see the new film "Streetdance" next Sunday. Yes, another dance film!! I must say, I don't have very high expectations for it. I think it seems as if it is going to be quite tacky and predictable, dance films often are! However, there are some dance films that I really enjoy and find very easy to watch, and maybe this film will prove me wrong, and turn out to be one of them. I'll keep you posted.
